Welded tuff thin section slide exhibiting a jumbled mass of irregularly sized broken clasts held in situ by finer ash particles which have become welded together. These ash particles were still so hot when they settled that they retained their softness, this allowed the particles to become welded when exposed to pressure. Layering within ash can be seen in this thin section view. This material was collected from Cumbria, the original rock is likely rhyolite which became broke up upon explosion. We supply this material as ignimbrite welded tuff in hand specimen and indeed the tuff almost looks like rhyolite and appears to show a form of banding. Each section is made to 30 microns thickness and the glass is 46 x 27 mm in size with a cover slip. Supplied in a protective card sleeve with a label, ideal for microscopy and educational purposes.
